Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte 49ers redshirt senior defensive end Tyriq Harris (Roanoke, Va.) has been named to the 11-man Conference USA all-Academic Team for the third time in his career, the league announced today. Harris is the 49ers first three-time all-Academic Team selection.
Harris, a three-time team captain, graduated cum laude with a degree in Biology and a 3.684 GPA. He is pursuing a second undergraduate degree and owns a 3.87 GPA in business. One of 12 finalists for the 2020 William V. Campbell Trophy awarded to college football’s top scholar-athlete, Harris was also named to the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. He was the 2018-19 C-USA Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year before missing the 2019 season with injury. He earned Academic all-District 3 honors from CoSIDA in the fall of 2018 and is now a three-time selection to the C-USA all-Academic Team (2017, 2018, 2020).
In addition, Harris is a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy which is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
A four-year starter, Harris was named Honorable Mention all-Conference USA in 2018 and was a 2016 C-USA all-Freshman team choice. Phil Steele named him a third-team all-Conference USA player following the 2018 season. He ranks seventh in school history with 168 career tackles, fifth in career tackles for loss (15.0) and fourth in career sacks (7.0). He has started the last 38 straight games in which he played in his 41-game career. He is the first 49er in school history to be named captain in three straight seasons (2018, 2019, 2020).
Charlotte has had a C-USA all-Academic Team selection in each year since joining the league in 2015. Harris is one of three 49ers that have been named. Punter Connor Bowler was named last year. Harris was named the previous two years and quarterback Lee McNeill was selected in 2015 and 2016.
