Talented point guard Caleb Love announced today that he will be returning to UNC, for his sophomore season. Love was selected as an All-ACC Freshman team pick, and is the third highest rated point guard signee in Roy Williams tenure at UNC (behind Ty Lawson, Cole Anthony). Love finished the season averaging 10.5 points per game, 3.6 assist, while playing 28 minutes a contest. Love showed his potential as an elite scorer several different times this year, including a 25 point performance against Duke on February 26th.
Embed from Getty ImagesDespite the flashes of Love’s scoring prowess, he also led the team with 89 turnovers and took at least 90 more shots than anybody else on the roster. If history can repeat itself, then Love will be the next UNC guard to improve his field goal percentage in his second season at UNC. Under Roy Williams tutelage former Tar Heel guards such as Raymond Felton, Kendall Marshall, and Marcus Paige all improved their field goal percentages as sophomores. With another offseason to master Roy Williams’ system, I expect Caleb to join the elite group of guards that saw success at UNC.
Caleb’s announcement came in the midst of a controversial week for the UNC basketball program, with rumors circulating that multiple players were disgruntled and entering the transfer portal. Caleb Love’s return immediately changes the outlook on next season for the UNC fanbase. If Roy Williams can recruit some shooters, and a stretch four to add on to a roster featuring Caleb Love, Kerwin Walton, RJ Davis, and Armando Bacot – you can expect UNC to be a top contender in college basketball next season.
