The Charlotte Hornets and guard Terry Rozier agreed on Thursday morning to a four-year, $97 million extension according to sources.
The fully guaranteed contract extends through the 2025-26 season, and also put Rozier as one of the highest paid guards in the NBA. Sources say his $24.25 million per year salary makes him the ninth-highest paid shooting guard in the league.
Rozier, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, led the Hornets in scoring last season, averaging a career high 20.4 points on 45% shooting from the floor and 39% from 3-point range. He also averaged a career high with 4 assists and 1 steal, while equaling his career high with 4 boards per game.
Rozier signed a three-year, $58 million contract with Charlotte as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2019-20 campaign. He has averaged 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists with the Hornets since becoming a member of the organization.
Rozier and veteran forward Gordon Hayward are two of the Hornets core members, along with Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges and P.J. Washington. They drafted James Bouknight with the 11th pick in the 2021 NBA draft and guard/forward Kelly Oubre Jr. in free agency from the Golden State Warriors.
This is not the only extension that was agreed upon this summer. Charlotte also retained the services of head coach James Borrego. He led them to a 33-39 record and a 10-seed in the play-in game, where they lost to the Indiana Pacers.
Last year, Charlotte was as high as a 4-seed in the Eastern Conference. Then it all came crashing down due to serious injuries that kept key players Ball, Hayward and Bridges out for substantial periods during the regular season.
