We got the first true disappointing loss of the season from the Hornets last night 113-110.
Charlotte made things interesting in the 4th, coming back after being down 20 early in the game, but couldn’t prevail giving the Hornets their 3rd loss this year.
Last night’s loss exploited two problems. The poor starts to games, and the lack of size.
One of those can be fixed, while the other you’re just going to have to adapt with what you got.
Miles Bridges addressed the problem that can be corrected in the slow starts. Here’s what Miles had to say…. (audio)
The Hornets have lost every first quarter they’ve played this season, except for 2. They tied in those first quarters with Boston and Orlando.
Orlando was also a team they struggled with when it came to size, just like last night against Cleveland.
The Cavs are a little different because they sport a frontline that includes 3 guys close to seven feet in their starting lineup and all are good players, but Charlotte’s lack of height has been the achilles heel for a while now.
Mason Plumlee has put up good rebounding totals, but if you look at the rebounding percentage compared to Cody Zeller, someone who signed for the vet minimum with Portland, they’re very similar.
Plumlee is a better shot blocker than Cody, but Plumlee still struggles mightily on the defensive end.
PJ Washington’s necessity has been apparent this season with him missing time. The net rating when he’s out on the floor playing the 5 spot has been plus overall. His positive influence at center has been noticeable since he’s been thrust in that spot, and he’s starting to shoot the ball better since his return from injury.
Of course you have the developmental guys who don’t play much or at all, but Charlotte once again will have to find ways to combat opponent’s size
