Just one look at the hardware will have you asking why the designer made it so life like? Was it really the best choice to make the trophy look like a realistic, bland, yet terrifying house for insects? Yes. Because it’s awesome.
The “Hornets” nickname has a rich tradition here in the Queen City.
For those that don’t know, the city hosted the battle at Charlotte during the Revolutionary War, in which the greatly outnumbered North Carolina Patriots were beaten by British Troops, but did enough damage to embarrass the Brits.
In response, British Commander Lord Cornwallis referred to Charlotte as a “Damned Hornets’ Nest, while insisting the leave quickly, and the area embraced the moniker.
So along with the NBA team nickname, and a minor league baseball team until the 70’s, the game between 2 storied basketball programs adopted the title.
Ok fine, the story is a lot cooler than the award.
Even so, both the 49ers and Wildcats would be glad to have it in their possession.
Ron Sanchez and company are coming off 2 straight losses to Toledo and Drexel after starting the season 3-0.
The Wildcats are on a 3 game winning streak after starting 1-2, most recently beating Robert Morris by 18.
A win on Tuesday would give Charlotte its first three-game win streak in the series since 2003-2005, with Ron Sanchez moving to 3-1 in his career against Bob McKillop.
Charlotte has a Final Four appearance in their history and of course we all remember Steph Curry’s reign with Davidson getting them so close to a Final Four trip of their own when he was there, but even with the basketball stature you think of with Davidson’s recent success, Charlotte has won the trophy 24 times.
Jahmir Young averaging 20 points a game will try to make sure tonight brings the trophy home a 25th time, alongside a chance to celebrate with the award and all its aesthetics.
