Charlotte 49er Quarterback Chris Reynolds is coming back in another year of eligibility to compete next season.
Here he is on The Afternoon Rush talking about his decision…. (audio)
Coming in as a walk-on in 2017, he became a starter since 2018 and I’ll make the case he’s the most important player this program has ever seen.
Sure, there’s been a lot of talent even for a school that’s only had football since 2013.
Larry Ojunjobi is one of the better defensive tackle’s in the game, Nate Davis was a high pick a couple years back, and Charlotte’s always been special at RB sporting Kalif Phillips and of course Benny LeMay.
But, Chris plays the most important position on the field, and he’s the unquestioned leader.
I think his significance was most apparent in 2019.
It’s Will Healy’s first year, so you have to think he’s going to bring in players that fit the identity he wants to construct, and Brad Lambert recruited players have to be nervous about playing time, it’s only natural.
Healy brings in a QB transfer from a higher profile school, and the idea is he’ll be the starter at some point. Never happened.
Instead, Chris would experience a breakout season as a red-shirt sophomore setting a school record throwing 22 passing touchdowns. He compiled over 3000 yards of offense, including 750 yards rushing. A true dual threat, that could throw the ball with accuracy.
This year he surpassed his own single season touchdown record, threw less picks, and even set all time passing records along the way.
I’ve talked about his toughness a million times, I’ve seen him take monster hits at 5’11” and bounce right back. We’ve seen him play hurt and still move the ball.
It’s that mentality that allows us to watch him one more year as Charlotte Football fans, as he and the 49ers look to get back to a bowl game.
