Wake Forest University Baseball advances to the College World Series after defeating the #16 seed University of Alabama 22-5 in game 2 of the Winston-Salem Super Regionals. This is Wake Forest’s third time in school history to advance to the College World Series, and the first time advancing since winning the Championship in 1955.
The Deacons swept the Crimson Tide with 18 hits to 22 runs, 10 of those being scored in the 8th and 9th innings. Wake Forest’s Josh Hartle had 11 strikeouts over six innings, and third baseman Brock Wilken went four for five with five runs.
Wilken’s home runs in the third and 9th innings increase his ACC-record to 70 career home runs.
Alabama’s offense struggled with third baseman Colby Shelton’s two home runs being the most offensive production by a player. The rest of the team combined for only three more runs despite having 18 hits. Alabama pitcher Garrett McMillan who didn’t even touch the field was ejected in the sixth inning during a television break, and it is still unknown as to why.
Alabama ended the game with 18 hits and no errors against Wake Forest’s 25 hits to no errors leading the Deacons to outhit the Tide. Number one seed Wake Forest advances to the College World Series with an overall record of 48-10.
The full game schedule for the World Series with game times is still undecided, but the first game will be played on June 16th.
