Jets Cut WR Adams

Just over three weeks after parting ways with four-time MVP quarterback 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, the Jets are releasing his best friend and favorite target. The New York Jets have kept their word to either trade or release wide receiver Davante Adams, with the team shockingly doing the latter. The organization is releasing the All-Pro wide receiver, according to multiple reports.

Adams is now free to sign with any other of the 31 teams he wishes, with many under the impression that he plans to follow Rodgers to whatever team the veteran signal caller might sign with.

The Jets reportedly had a difficult time finding a trade partner for Adams, which is most likely because of his huge contract. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Adams’ release saves the Jets $30 million on their cap.

Adams had joined Rodgers at the Jets in the 2024 campaign, as the Jets offered the Las Vegas Raiders a third-round pick to acquire the All-Pro receiver. The overwhelming issue was that the elite connection between Rodgers and Adams did not live up to what the team was hoping for.

Adams concluded the 2024 season with 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns, but the Jets still managed only to register a disappointing 5-12 record. The dreadful 2024 season led to Robert Saleh getting the ax after Week 5, and the franchise doing a 180, moving in a completely different direction at the conclusion of the season.

Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was hired as the organization’s new head coach, and Glenn and the ownership came to an agreement to first move on from Rodgers on Super Bowl Sunday.

The separation for the Jets and Rodgers made complete sense, and cutting Adams due to his sizable contract also was the right thing to do. New York certainly wants to start the 2025 season on a clean slate, and cutting the veterans was rumored to happen for months.

Now, Adams can sign wherever he pleases, and he might not have to move far. The New York Giants have been attached to Rodgers ever since Matthew Stafford re-signed with the Los Angeles Rams on Friday.

Should the Giants bring Rodgers aboard, it would make sense for Adams to follow his quarterback. The Giants need another star wide receiver, and though they have Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson, they are in desperate need of a strong veteran presence, both on the field and in the locker room.

Adams had a bounce back year statistically with Rodgers, and their chemistry is hard to overlook. It would be a good move for the Giants to explore bringing in both.
