Kyren Lacy, Former LSU Wide Receiver, Dies Amid Legal Troubles

Kyren Lacy, a 24-year-old former LSU wide receiver and NFL Draft prospect, died by suicide on April 12, 2025, following a police chase near Houston, Texas. Authorities reported that Lacy sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound before crashing his vehicle. The incident began after Lacy allegedly discharged a firearm during a family dispute and fled the scene, prompting a police pursuit.

Lacy’s death occurred just days before a scheduled grand jury hearing in Louisiana regarding a December 2024 car accident. In that incident, Lacy was accused of causing a fatal collision that killed a 78-year-old former Marine and fleeing the scene without rendering aid. He faced charges including negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving but was out on bail.

During his college career, Lacy played for both the University of Louisiana and LSU, amassing 162 receptions, 2,360 yards, and 26 touchdowns over 64 games. He had declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and participated in LSU’s pro day in March.

Lacy’s passing has elicited an outpouring of grief from the football community. New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers, a former LSU teammate, expressed deep sorrow, stating he was “broken” and “devastated” by the news. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott also shared an emotional message, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and urging those in need to seek help.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is conducting an autopsy, and investigations into Lacy’s death are ongoing.
