Former Raider WR Renfrow Signs with Panthers

It is all about the quarterback.

The Carolina Panthers are not done adding to their wide receiver room.

The team agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran wideout Hunter Renfrow on Sunday. The immediate terms and details of the contract were not made public.

The Panthers are coming off a solid draft weekend that saw them add wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan in the first round with the 8th overall pick and receiver/returner Jimmy Horn Jr. from the University of Colorado in the sixth round. Renfrow, who took a sabbatical from the NFL after being cut by the Las Vegas Raiders last offseason, will also be added to the suddenly packed depth chart at the position.

Renfrow, 29 years old, was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021. He hauled in 269 receptions for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns from 2019 to 2023 with the Raiders. The 2019 fifth-round pick produced 25 catches for 255 yards in his final year in ‘Sin City’, Las Vegas.

The former Clemson Tigers playmaker, who is a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native, will compete for playing time in a crowded room of young and experienced talent. He also has spent time as a punt returner, as he averaged 9.7 yards per return during his five-year stint with the Raiders. The Panthers selected Horn, at least partially because of his return ability and experience, so Horn and Renfrow could battle it out this summer for that job.

Renfrow’s main competition behind McMillan, Xavier Legette and Adam Thielen will be David Moore, Jalen Coker and Dan Chisena. He will need to show and prove that he has not lost a step in his speed and route-running prowess after taking a one-year break from football.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound receiver will also face competition at wideout with Horn and a number of reported undrafted rookies.
The Panthers have agreed to terms with more undrafted rookies than their roster will currently allow. Hunter is now added with that group. So, the Panthers will need to make some roster cuts to their incumbent depth chart to house all the new players.
