The Panthers wrapped up day three of four straight practices with a shortened session focused on being consistent, communicating, and “flying around”.
Multiple Panther players have told the media this team is “player driven”. Dave Canales shared the same sentiment, saying “I have to set the foundation, I have to lay the standard…the coaching staff as well. [Coaches] don’t get to play and that’s a good thing. These guys are the ones that have to be out there talking to each other…it really comes down to them being able to execute in all situations on gameday”.
Veteran players Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble have exemplified the aforementioned player leadership by taking rookie tight-end Ja’Tavion Sanders under their wing.
The former Longhorn has impressed during training camp, using his route running skills and size to make plays during short stints in scrimmages and 1-on-1 drills. Xavier Legette’s injury scare that resulted in a negative x-ray and being listed as day-to-day, along with Tommy Tremble’s recovery, has opened up even more room for Sanders. Dave Canales does not expect Legette to suit up for Thursday’s preseason opener against the New England Patriots, but remains hopeful for an appearance sooner, rather than later.
Xavier Woods and Lamar Jackson have made notable strides in training camp as well. Canales is happy with Jackson’s effort in drills, but wants to see the fourth-year cornerback make the jump to in-game production. “[Lamar] has put enough stuff on film. We really want to see him make that jump and take it to the games, make those plays and do it with confidence.”
The Panthers will practice tomorrow before having an off-day on Wednesday, as they prepare for the trip to New England.
