The injury bug has reared its ugly head again ahead of a must win game on Sunday. It has been an intense week for the San Francisco 49ers. After a devasting loss to their NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks, they are set for an important matchup on the road at Lambeau Field with Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.
The 49ers are gearing up to go head-to-head with the 7-3 Packers without their starting quarterback. QB1 Brock Purdy (right shoulder) was ruled out of the team’s Week 12 contest after being a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday and sitting out of Friday’s workout altogether. The 49ers third-year quarterback who was the last pick in the draft, sustained his right shoulder injury in San Francisco’s Week 11 matchup against the Seahawks.
“I don’t want to say there is long term concern. We got the MRI on Monday, we really just thought he needed some rest,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday.
“We really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week, but when he started up Thursday, it surprised him, it surprised us how (his shoulder injury) felt. So, we had to shut him down.
“I really don’t know what to think of it. The MRI doesn’t look like that, so it should be all right. But, the way it responded, it really is up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.”

With Purdy out of the lineup against the Packers, ninth-year veteran and career backup Brandon Allen will be leading the 49ers offense on Sunday on the ‘Frozen Tundra’.
Allen was named the 49ers backup quarterback in September. He has made a total of nine starts in his NFL career with his most recent start coming in the final game of the 2021 season as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. In that contest, Allen completed 15-of-29 pass attempts for 136 yards and a touchdown in the team’s narrow loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Defensive lineman Nick Bosa, who was sidelined for all three practices this week due to a hip/oblique injury, was also ruled out for Sunday. Meanwhile, 36-year-old left tackle Trent Williams enters the weekend as questionable.
So, the 49ers are the walking wounded, being without Purdy, Bosa, as well as four other players: Jacob Cowing (concussion), Tatum Bethune (knee), Kevin Givens (groin) and Charvarius Ward (personal). Jon Feliciano (knee) is also questionable.
The Packers, who came off an emotional 20-19 road win against the Chicago Bears will be without star corner Jaire Alexander (knee) and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring).
