Jones, Sanders Talk About Cowboys Coaching Job

Could ‘Prime Time’ in fact make the leap from Boulder back to Dallas?

Even with all the talks and confirmations that Deion Sanders would not jump ship and leave the program that he has built from the bottom up over the last two years, the Colorado Buffaloes, for an opportunity to coach at the next level, in the NFL, that could be changing before our very eyes. Sanders has reportedly had conversations with the Dallas Cowboys about their now-vacant head coach position.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, “Sources: #Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has spoken with Colorado HC Deion Sanders about the team’s head coaching vacancy, and discussions are expected to continue regarding the possibility of him becoming the next head coach in Dallas. Coach Prime is considered a top candidate, though the Cowboys plan to interview other candidates as part of the process, per team sources.”

Schultz indicated that Sanders is a “top candidate” for the Cowboys, but they will also be interviewing other candidates.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday night. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

What makes this new development mind boggling and thrilling all at the same time is that Sanders had said on multiple occasions that he had no interest in coaching in the NFL. However, he more recently stated he would head to the pros if he could coach his sons.

The sticking point is that the most sought after of the Sanders sons is quarterback Shadeur Sanders, who is expected to be the No.1 pick in the NFL draft, which goes to the Tennessee Titans. The Cowboys would have to make an unprecedented jump from their current No. 12 selection to land Shadeur if that was a request that Deion made.

Dallas could also go after Shilo Sanders, but he is likely set to be a later-round pick in the draft. This is just reckless speculation regarding Deion’s latest comments on the matter.

There is no doubt that Deion is a proven winner. First, he was a winner as a player. He then went on to turn around Jackson State, the Colorado football program, and could theoretically do the same at the professional level.

Deion has demonstrated over time that he can be a leader of men, rally a team and bring players together. He is also one of the best players the game has ever seen.

Deion’s celebrity status along with his coaching prowess and previous playing career could lead to many free agents wanting to choose Dallas as their next playing destination.

The Cowboys have a head coach vacancy after the somewhat surprising news they chose to part ways with Mike McCarthy after five seasons on the job. The news came as a shock due to both sides presumably trying to hammer out a new contract.

The Chicago Bears attempted to interview McCarthy last week, but that request was blocked by the Cowboys. This signaled that a new deal was in the works. The Cowboys then revealed that they would instead move on from McCarthy. Now, the Cowboys could be aiming to bring in one of the more exciting candidates, Deion Sanders.
