UNC legend and Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams retires after an iconic 48 years of coaching

North Carolina legend Roy Williams announced his retirement today, after 48 years of coaching high school and college basketball. Coach Williams will finish his career with 903 total wins, putting him 3rd on the all times win list, and is the only coach to win over 400 games at two different schools (UNC, Kansas).

Williams began his coaching career at Charles D. Owen High School in Swannanoa, North Carolina. He coached there for 5 years, before he became an assistant coach at UNC alongside his mentor Dean Smith. After 10 seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, he took over the head coaching job at Kansas in 1988. During his time at Kansas, he led the Jayhawks to 9 regular season conference titles, 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, 4 Final Fours, and 2 National Championship game appearances.

In 2003, Coach Williams returned home to Chapel Hill. During his 18 year tenure at UNC, he won 3 national championships (2005, 2009, 2017), and went to 5 Final Fours. The Tar Heels also won 9 ACC regular season titles, 3 ACC Tournament Championships, and only missed the NCAA Tournament twice with Roy Williams as the head coach. Williams will wrap up his career at UNC with an overall record of 485-163.

The legendary coach will hold a formal press conference on the court that bears his name at 4:00 pm eastern time on Thursday.
