Duke’s Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski Plans to Step Away after Next Season

According to sources, Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, also known as ‘Coach K’, plans to retire at the conclusion of next season. Coach K, who has the most wins in NCAA basketball history, has won five National Championships during his 41 year career with the Blue Devils.

John Scheyer, who is the current associate head coach, has been named the successor to Krzyzewski. He will spend the next season recruiting players to start his own regime.

Duke did reach out to other candidates such as Tommy Amaker, who is the head coach at Howard University. Scheyer’s prior recruitment of Zion Williamson and Jayson Tatum, proved to be a major deciding factor in receiving the coaching opportunity.

Coach K, who is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, has 1,097 career victories and has led the Blue Devils to the Final Four an incredible 12 times. He has won 12 regular-season ACC titles and 15 conference tournament titles.

Krzyzewski has also led players to the next level, with 28 top 10 selections and 41 first round draft picks. Coach K only trails UCLA’s John Wooden in national titles (10-5). He ranks #1 with 97 NCAA tournament wins and 126 weeks on the Associated Press Top 25 poll. If you include his five year career at Army, he has an overall record of 1,170 -36 record.

For the first time in a quarter of a century, Duke missed out on March Madness. However, they do have a top recruiting class for the 2021-22 season.

Scheyer, who played at Duke from 2006-10, was a member of the 2010 National Championship team. He has been with the staff since 2013 and has been in his present role since 2017. He served as interim coach against Boston College when Krzyzewski was out due to COVID-19 protocols. This will be his first experience as a college head coach.
