According to ESPN Brian Windhorst, three members of the USA Select Team in Las Vegas are out of training camp due to COVID-19 protocols. The players are Immanuel Quickley of the New York Knicks, P.J. Washington and Miles Bridges of the Charlotte Hornets. It is not clear as of yet if any of the three players tested positive for COVID-19 or were in close contact with someone who contracted the virus.
Quickley, Bridges and Washington were part of a 17 player selection to participate and help the USA Basketball team prepare for the Olympics in Tokyo that are to take place later on this month.
New York Knicks rookie teammates Obi Toppin and Quickley were chosen to be a part of the Select Team. Quickley, 22 years of age, averaged 11.4 points per game coming off the bench and 39 percent from deep in his first season.
Charlotte Hornets teammates Washington and Bridges were first round draft picks in their two draft classes. 23 year old Bridges was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2019, but on draft day, they made a deal to send him to the Hornets in exchange for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds per game in the 2020-21 regular season. Washington set a career high for himself with 13 points and 7 rebounds in 65 games for the Hornets.
The Select Team is scheduled to scrimmage Friday, its last training camp session. Team USA plays its first exhibition game Saturday vs. Nigeria in Las Vegas.
