According to sources, Bubba Chandler, a Clemson football and baseball signee, was drafted on Day 2 of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.
Chandler was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the number one pick of the third round, and 72nd overall. The projected signing bonus is $870,000. Chandler took to social media to announce his selection. It most likely means that his college career at Clemson is over before it started and he will solely focus on baseball.
Here are some facts about Chandler. He’s from Bogart, Georgia. He was a standout quarterback for North Oconne High School last season, where he accumulated over 2,000 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns. On the baseball diamond, he hit for average and power. Chandler hit over .400 with 8 homeruns.
In an interview with MLB Network, Chandler expressed his enjoyment with being around the Clemson football team over the past several weeks.
“Coach Swinney, he’s the best,” Chandler said. “What you see on television is what you get in person. He’s been great to our family and I love him to death. But if I do choose to play baseball I’ll probably shed a tear or two. But all the guys up here are great and on my side whatever I decide to do. The quarterback room up here is top notch along with all the coaches.”
Chandler isn’t the only Clemson signee that expects to hear his name called in the MLB Draft. Will Taylor is another dual sports star. There is a good possibility that he will be drafted on Monday.
Taylor graduated from Dutch Fork High School. As the Silver Foxes’ signal caller last year, he passed for over 2,200 yards with a total of 21 touchdowns. Taylor aided Dutch Fork in winning their 5th straight state championship.
During his senior baseball campaign, he had a great overall individual season. Taylor posted .450 batting average with 7 homeruns, 34 runs scored and 33 RBI. He led his school to an 18-6 record and a trip to the district final. Taylor was also able to show off his speed, swiping 21 bases. He also had patience at the plate, walking 25 times. He put together strong on-base numbers, .586 and slugging 1.455.
To top it off, Joe Mack, also a Clemson signee, was drafted 31st overall by the Miami Marlins in the first round of the MLB Draft on Sunday.
Players chosen in the MLB Draft have until the first of August to declare their playing status, to turn pro in baseball or continue their college careers.
