LB Tyler Murray led the Charlotte 49ers in tackles, beating the Gardner-Webb Bull Dogs Saturday night 38-10.
Those tackles included half a sack, one tackle for loss, and one QB hurry, on top of a good game in coverage for the Red-Shirt Senior. The guy can’t help but make plays, even if he stole half a sack from Tyson Clawson…. (audio)
It’s nothing new, he lead the team in tackles last year during his first year with the program.
Murray transferred to Charlotte after enrolling at Troy and balling out down there too. He was Third team All-Sun Belt in 2018 and had a knack at getting the ball back for his offense. He tallied 3 interceptions and a forced fumble that year, but decided it was time to move on.
He talked about that process on The Afternoon Rush… (audio)
It didn’t take long before we knew he’d be a defensive leader for Charlotte.
In his debut against Appalachian State last season, he was named C-USA player of the week after accumulating 14 tackles, intercepting a pass, forcing a fumble, and recovering another. He was all over the field.
Did I mention he recovered another fumble against Duke in the opener this year and hurried the quarterback twice?
Will Healy has done a phenomenal job bringing in talent on the recruiting trail talking with high-school seniors ready to make that jump into college football, but the ability to add talent through the transfer portal has been crucial. It’s also shown the ability to adapt to something so prevalent these days in college football.
At least when it comes to the defense, Tyler Murray might be the most important transfer addition so far.
