The Extra Point: Coach Cara Consuegra sets Womens Basketball record at Charlotte

Will Healy is on the brink of another bowl season, Ron Sanchez helped Charlotte Men’s basketball get to 4th in the conference standings by his 2nd year, and Rob Woodard went 24-8 in his first full season as the baseball coach.

Charlotte 49ers Athletic Director Mike Hill deservedly gets a lot of credit for the coaches he’s hired during his tenure, but he doesn’t get enough for a coach that stuck around.

Charlotte Women’s Basketball coach Cara Consuegra set a school record for most wins in program history, when Charlotte beat Richmond 63-45 yesterday. It was the 176th victory during her time here.

Coach Consuegra and the 49ers are expected to win plenty more after the team was voted as the preseason favorite to finish first in Conference USA.

After all, it’s what she’s done her entire career; pile up conference wins ever since she set foot on campus.

Her first and only 2 years in the Atlantic 10, she won 75 percent of her games in league play, including the 13-1 year she posted her 2nd go-around.

The success followed her to Conference USA, having never posted a losing record against those teams since entering in 2013.

She would hate the excuse, but I’d argue the only reason you’ve seen a couple overall losing seasons, though not by much, has been due to the consistently tough non-conference scheduling.

Just last season, they played App State, Clemson, Wake Forest, and North Carolina all in a row to open up the season. They’ll play North Carolina again this Sunday.

She’s recruited really talented players with recent examples being Nyilah Jamison-Myers, Laia Raventos, and Octavia Jett-Wilson who is expected to do great things this season, just like last year.

Congrats to Coach Consuegra on earning the most wins in Charlotte Women’s basketball history, with plenty more on the horizon.
