Charlotte Basketball Names Aaron Fearne as Interim Head Coach

By: Jacob Moss

Following the resignation of longtime head coach Ron Sanchez on Tuesday, Charlotte athletics announced today that Associate Head Coach Aaron Fearne had been named Interim Head Coach.

Fearne has been on the Charlotte coaching staff for the past five season and has been a large part
of the program landing multiple highly ranked recruiting classes, which includes the top-rated
class in Conference USA the last three years. Fearne played a big role in UNCC’s twenty-one
wins this past season, which were the most wins the team has recorded in a single season since
2001.

Prior to joining Charlotte’s staff, Ferne spent seventeen seasons coaching the Cairns Terrapins, which is a pro team in Australia’s National Basketball League. This stint included nine seasons as the head coach of the terrapins, so Fearne brings a good amount of head coaching experience to the table.

It is unclear as of yet where Charlotte AD Mike Hill plans to go as far as a long-term replacement for Sanchez is concerned. A coaching search is expected to be undertaken, and someone with the experience that Fearne has would make him a prime candidate for consideration on paper.

Regardless of where the Charlotte Basketball ends up landing as far as their next head coach is concerned, having someone like Fearne holding the position in the interim should allow for a smooth transition.
