After a week of roster configurations and an additional practice on Thursday, the Carolina Panthers will take some much needed time off this weekend. However, the Panthers continue to make moves for the team.
Carolina announced the signing of Ex-Jets QB James Morgan. Morgan will be on the practice squad ahead of the regular season opener against the New York Jets next Sunday.
Morgan became a member of the Jets last season. He was selected in the fourth-round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Florida International University. Morgan was released by the Jets on Tuesday, ahead of the 53-man roster mandatory cuts deadline.
The signing comes a few month after the Panthers acquired QB Sam Darnold in a trade with New York. Darnold is scheduled to be the Panthers starter this season. Morgan and Darnold were teammates in 2020 in New York.
Morgan has yet to attempt a pass in his NFL career during the regular season. However, he played well in his last preseason outing, completing a Hail Mary pass that put the Jets in position for a tie with the Philadelphia Eagles. Jets General Manager Joe Douglas wanted to keep Morgan on the practice squad, but he chose to join Carolina.
After spending an entire training camp with the Jets learning the new offense, Morgan should have some valuable information to impart on his new teammates and coaches.
Carolina also had another pair of moves that involved the practice squad. They signed pass catcher Aaron Parker and waived cornerback Rahsaan Melvin. Melvin’s exclusion from the initial 53-man roster was one of the more surprising moves from the team this past week.
Today’s release of the seventh-year veteran, in conjunction with Morgan and Parker joining the team, leaves the Panthers with three available spots to be filled on the practice squad.
